Who Were the Rothschilds? Banking, Zionism, Palestine & the Road to World War I
Includes videoYou've heard the name Rothschild—but how does one European banking family become part of the story of Zionism, Palestine, and the geopolitical events surrounding World War I?
This clip starts with Mayer Amschel Rothschild, the 18th-century Frankfurt financier whose five sons established branches of the family's banking business across Europe's major financial centers. Their expansion helped create one of the most influential banking dynasties in modern European history.
But the story doesn't end with banking.
For anyone trying to understand the history behind today's Israel–Palestine conflict, it's important to understand the political and financial world that existed before the State of Israel was created.
The Rothschild name becomes particularly relevant to the history of political Zionism and Palestine through Baron Edmond de Rothschild, a major financial supporter of early Jewish agricultural settlements in Palestine, and Baron Walter Rothschild, the recipient of the 1917 Balfour Declaration.
The Balfour Declaration is a crucial piece of the timeline: during World War I, Britain's government declared its support for establishing a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine while also stating that the civil and religious rights of Palestine's existing non-Jewish communities should not be prejudiced.
That raises the historical questions that still matter today:
Why did Britain make that promise during World War I?
What role did Zionist political organizations play?
Why was Palestine chosen?
What did British leaders believe they were accomplishing?
And how did decisions made during World War I contribute to the political conflict we are still watching more than a century later?
This is where understanding the Rothschild family, European banking, Zionism, British imperial policy, the Balfour Declaration, World War I, and Palestine becomes important.
One important distinction: documented Rothschild involvement in Zionist causes and Palestine is historical fact. That is different from claims that the Rothschild family secretly controlled World War I or created every aspect of Zionism. Those broader claims require separate evidence and should be examined critically.
Start with the history. Follow the timeline. Then decide what the evidence actually supports.
